The goldfinches showed up about mid January at our feeders. We picked up an extra bird feeder and a couple of bags of thistle for them. They also like black sunflower seeds. Since squirrels don’t eat thistle it’s a better option.
They migrate through in large flocks 20 to 30 strong. There are many very hungry goldfinches here now. I’m told they stay in Houston from mid November to mid April. They avoid the feeders until all other food is gone. You won’t likely see them at your feeders until after we’ve had a few weeks of cold weather and rain.
They are very timid. It took more than a week before they would just eat and run at the feeder. Even now they scatter if they spot me watching them. Today is the first day they have held their ground while other birds came to the feeder.
